    The Civil Code was renamed the Napoleonic Code by the law of September 3, 1807. The 1810 edition, thus renamed the "Napoleonic Code," is the rarest version, in octavo format, and it was not until the ordinance of August 3, 1816, that the royal designations replaced the imperial ones. This edition also saw the omission of the preamble. A decree of 1852 reinstated the name Napoleon "to pay homage to historical truth and national sentiment."
