Houpin, founder of the Journal des sociétés in 1879 (the first journal specifically devoted to this subject), published a "Treatise on French and Foreign Joint-Stock Companies and Insurance Companies" in 1889. In 1895, he published a second edition under the title of the present work, followed by a third in 1899. Our copy is from a second, updated printing of this edition. The book's publication continued with a fourth edition in 1909. In 1919, it underwent a new transformation under the direction of Bosvieux, who published a fifth edition in three volumes, notably incorporating the law of associations and that of civil companies. This edition went through numerous updated printings (a fifth printing in 1925) and was subsequently revised for a sixth edition. (1927) then a 7th (1935-37). It is a classic in all the bibliographies of major post-war commercial law manuals and constitutes a valuable source, given the precision of the case law references, for the study of this subject.
