This is probably the most important treatise on ecclesiastical criminal law from the 18th century. Although written by a Spanish canonist, it reflects a very clear liberal evolution. The text is also valuable for its clarity and rigorous exposition. Several curiosities also deserve to be highlighted: a chapter devoted to physical appearance, showing in particular that ugliness does not presume evil; a chapter devoted to the “quaestio,” the Inquisition; and a chapter on women, which contains this interesting presumption: “A woman who enters the home of a lawyer is presumed to have come to seek legal advice and not to commit fornication!” Very rare.
