quarto, mottled brown calf, spine with raised bands and gilt decoration, brown title page, fine vignettes and initial letters, (scuffing on the covers and spine, bumped corners, slight worming to the margin and stain, tear on p. 228 without consequence on the text), dry stamps with the arms of France on the title page. , 222pp. + table.
First edition of the “Code Louis,” that is, the civil ordinance of 1667—devoted primarily to procedural matters—and the first of the major ordinances drafted under Colbert's direction. Our copy is in very good internal condition. The endpapers have been annotated by one of the book's owners, Mr. Robin; these include a handwritten list of the Kings of France since “Pharamond,” a series of provenance notes, and finally, a small “game for learning plainsong by the sy” with two musical staves. Overall, a charming copy of this rare edition.
