A fundamental and very rare text in which the author studies Italy's criminal policy, the sources of the nature of National Socialist criminal law, and the criminal policy of the Soviet state. Like many of the legal scholars of the 1930s, the author starts from the premise that the aim is not to critique these structures but to try to understand their modes of operation and sources of inspiration in order to—and this is the fundamental theme of the final lecture—extract those lessons that could be applied within a preserved democratic framework. Ultimately, one senses in D. a certain interest not in the substance of the doctrine itself, but in the methods by which reforms can be adopted, whereas in France, the final years of the Third Republic made such reforms far more problematic.
