The author (1522-1590) is the writer of the text known as the “Institutes of Canon Law,” which is reproduced in most Corpus Juris Canonici. His text, written at the request of Pope Paul IV, was never implemented by his successors, and thus remains a private compilation, somewhat reminiscent of the fate of French legal codes of the same period. It was reprinted extensively until the end of the 18th century. Our edition, while not one of the very first, is nevertheless very close to the original.
