It was during this assembly that the Four Articles summarizing Gallican doctrine were adopted, two propositions of which were vehemently contested by the Holy See: the first asserting the superiority of the ecumenical council over the Holy See, and the second challenging papal infallibility. This doctrine was established as state law by the edict of March 22, 1682 (on the history of this matter, see, e.g., Ph. Sueur, Vol. 2, p. 437). The text we possess is a collection of high-quality records from this assembly of the clergy, compiled by a judge who was openly and ardently ultramontane.
