Definitive edition of Ch.'s major legal works, published shortly after his death (in 1613). The "Pandects" are a general treatise on the whole of French law (which the author could have called "Institutions," in accordance with the practice emerging at the time). The "Responses" constitute a series of studies on questions, some of which originated from consultations given by the author (see, for example, Response 55); the interrogative form of the questions is not systematic. The "Resolutions" follow the questions, although this time the interrogative form is entirely abandoned. This text could be considered a kind of addition to the preceding one, either for more recent judgments or for observations made to him regarding the earlier texts (see, for example, Part IV, Title 3). The "Memorables or Observations on French Law" are in reality an alphabetical dictionary of law, probably the first and one of the most important of its kind on early law. In addition to these texts, there is his commentary on the custom of Paris. This is a fundamental and extremely rare collection, as these texts have seldom been bound together, and it provides access to all of the author's works except for his commentaries on the Somme rural and the Code Henri III. It is regrettable that, within the limited scope of this commentary, we cannot fully emphasize the exceptional clarity and intelligence of these various works, which, in our opinion, far surpass in quality those of Coquille and even those of Dumoulin (for more detailed analyses of some of these works, see cat. MDD no. 10-025 (mémorables), 12-050 (responses), 8-006 (custom of the city of Paris)).
