(Dupin no. 984). It is hardly necessary to introduce this work. Even today, Loyseau's treatises, and in particular his treatise on lordships and orders of simple dignity, are considered one of the foundational texts of public law and the concept of sovereignty. It should simply be emphasized that the edition presented here is one of the last published before the Revolution, and that its writing style is modernized compared to the original editions from the beginning of the 17th century and the one generally cited in modern works. Beyond its status as a reference work on the subject, Loyseau's treatise on the law of offices is above all one of the most complete bodies of work on the theory of absolutist sovereignty (see B. Gaudemet-Basdevant: Aux origines de l'État moderne, Charles Loiseau, 1564-1627, théoricien de la puissance publique, Paris 1967). Furthermore, the treatise on orders and simple dignities constitutes the foundational analysis on the hierarchical social distribution, classifying the clergy at the top and then the nobility (Sueur T. II, P. 513).
