It would be wise to stop, as some authors do, considering de Lolme a less gifted successor to Montesquieu. In reality, his major work contains, in comparison to The Spirit of the Laws, new information on the workings of the British regime, particularly in its relationship to the American conflict. Moreover, the latest editions have been substantially expanded, and one cannot help but be struck by the indirect allusions the author makes to the French situation in his praise of the English monarchy.
