In the literature on justices of the peace, this work stands out somewhat, as it is not yet another general treatise on the subject but rather a reflection on the magistrate's conduct in his role, whether as President of the Conciliation Board, as well as in charge of civil and criminal cases, and even in certain politically charged matters. In our view, it is an original and important source for the study not only of justices of the peace but also of the history of justice in the 19th century, as it reveals the relationships between the authorities, litigants, and magistrates in a very open manner, a form rarely found at the time.
