Villers, author of a celebrated work on the influence of the Reformation on the political situation of European states and on the progress of the Enlightenment, had written this last text, which was only published posthumously. To mark the 300th anniversary of the publication of the Augsburg Confession, a number of historical, and in some cases political, commemorative documents were printed, marking one of the first jubilees that the Lutheran Church could openly celebrate in France.
