This text was initially published in French (first edition dated 1771 in Amsterdam by van Harrevelt, octavo, 310 pp.). It was subsequently translated into English (The Constitution of England, or an Account of the English Government…, first English edition in 1775 by D. Spilsbury and G. Kearsley, octavo, 448 pp.). Until 1785, it was reprinted in French (Amsterdam 1774, 1778) and in English (London 1777…). In 1779, a new, considerably more extensive English edition appeared. Its translation was published in France in 1785. We are presenting the first edition of this new translation, which is therefore partially original. Subsequent editions continued at a steady pace in both France and England, throughout the Revolution and the first half of the 19th century. It was later translated into German, but it was probably in England and English-speaking countries that it had the greatest influence. Blackstone, for example, published an edition supplementing his commentaries on English law, prompting Bentham to remark, “Blackstone has copied; but Mr. de Lolme has thought.” On de Lolme’s influence in Canada, see, e.g., J. P. Wallot, Frontière ou fragment du système atlantique: Des idées étrangères dans l'identité bas-canadienne au début du XIXe siècle (Canadian Historical Society, Presidential Address for the Year 1983, available at www.cha-shc.ca/bilingue/addresses/1983.htm).
