Gidel, who was also interested in constitutional law and public international law, was one of the most famous French maritime law scholars (see Truyol, p. 164). In the 1930s, he published, in particular, a work on the public international law of the sea, but after that date, no updates to his volumes were published. Consequently, the three DES (Diploma of Specialized Higher Studies) courses presented here, which respectively cover peacetime and wartime rules, constitute the author's final expression of thought and, in this respect, an essential document for the subject.
