In 1886, PV published a “Précis de l'histoire du droit français” (Summary of the History of French Law), which contained only a first part on private law and in which he announced a second part devoted to public law. However, due to an editorial change, this second part was never published, and the author instead wrote a “Histoire des institutions politiques et administratives de la France” (History of the Political and Administrative Institutions of France) in three volumes between 1890 and 1903 (MDD catalog no. 11-371). Because of this change, he renamed the first part “Histoire du droit civil français” (History of French Civil Law). This is the text we have here, with a significantly improved bibliography. It is worth noting that this is one of the cornerstones of French legal history (the first work cited by Olivier Martin in his bibliography), which is particularly concerned with the study of the sources of law and legal doctrine.
