The Restoration marked the beginning of a renewed interest in the Chancellor's thought, with royalist doctrine seeing in him a means of extracting a pre-codifying figure untainted by either the Revolution or Napoleonic influence. Consequently, several re-editions of his works were undertaken. In 1820, selected works were published in six volumes, and in 1822, a shorter collection was released, the first volume containing only d'Aguesseau's speeches and legal pronouncements (including, in particular, his major discourses on the qualities of the various legal professions: the independence of the lawyer, the authority of magistrates, the justice of the magistrate, and "the magistrate's commitment to public service"). The second, no less interesting volume contains the instruction he had written for his son, outlining a general plan of study, particularly for the study of law, and in which we find, penned by the eminent magistrate, a methodical exposition of the various legal subjects. The text concludes with the famous “institution in public law” which, in our opinion, deserves to be re-examined and studied more today than it is.
