(Dupin no. 1794). Savary is indisputably the most important author of French commercial law of the Ancien Régime, to the point that Colbert's ordinance on commerce, of which he was the principal inspiration and drafter, is generally called the "Savary Code." Legal historians emphasize that Savary is the only commercial law expert of the Ancien Régime to have gone beyond a simple literal analysis of the ordinance to produce a true treatise on commercial law (J. Hilaire, IHDC, PUF 1986). The edition presented here is one of the first to have benefited from the addition of all the legal opinions written by Savary that had remained in manuscript form until his death (the Parères), opinions which were so authoritative that they were sometimes reproduced verbatim in the decrees of the Parlements. This Perfect Merchant is also one of the rare legal works to benefit from a meticulously produced edition, notably including a portrait of the author engraved by Coypel and a magnificent full-page engraving depicting a commercial scene around a seaport. This copy is further accompanied by an edition of Naulot's Treatise on Foreign Exchange, which provides the exchange rates of all the major European currencies and all the formulas for calculating the various conversions. A truly beautiful set.
