    Utilitarianism is the moral philosophy that elevates utility to a principle. Rooted in Anglo-Saxon political culture and too often reduced to the economic theory that has embraced it, it maintains a privileged relationship with law. Utilitarian philosophy, extending into social organization to achieve public happiness, permeates the legal system. Such a movement can be observed in French law. Through the expression "legal utilitarianism," this work aims to present the proceedings of the conference held on December 7, 2023, at the University of Cergy Paris, during which the contributors incorporated the question of utility into their reasoning. A convergence of methods emerged for addressing positive law and its evolution. Whether it involves determining the fundamental relationship between law and morality or revealing the instrumentalization of utility in understanding the consequences of norms, utilitarianism offers a relevant analytical framework. The articles that structure the book illustrate this.
