What jurist, ancient or modern, private or public law specialist, has not encountered the famous maxims of Antoine Loisel? This major figure of legal humanism, trained by La Ramée and Cujas, profoundly marked the history of law and legal thought with his renowned *Institutes coutumières*. This masterpiece of legal literature brings together nine hundred and eight maxims whose concision and charming sound, sometimes bordering on poetry, contrast sharply with the harshness and severity of the rules they conceal. Some still resonate in law faculties, whether used by professors to help students grasp some challenging legal reasoning or by researchers to situate a legal issue within the long legal tradition. The *Institutes coutumières* are part of a much larger and more prolific body of work, the work of a lifetime devoted to writing and comprised of a multitude of pleadings, speeches, memoirs, and remonstrances. It reveals a more political Loisel, entirely devoted to royal power, which he considers the only force capable of restoring the unity of a nation torn apart by religious strife. Law plays a crucial role in this process. Behind the adages and maxims, a certain vision of customary law emerges, which Loisel, following in the footsteps of jurists like Du Moulin and Coquille, seeks to demonstrate is common to the entirety of a kingdom then marked by diversity and legal fragmentation.
