In 1625, Hugo Grotius's *De jure belli ac pacis Libri tres* was published in Paris, dedicated to Louis XIII. For this fourth centenary, following three previous French translations of this work, Dominique Gaurier deemed it necessary to undertake a complete retranslation, allowing interested readers to finally access the original content without rewriting it or making it say what it did not say. Indeed, previous translators seem to have imposed their own ideas in their translations rather than those of the author, notably by over-modernizing the text and its concepts. This latest translator, who has translated many other works by Grotius from both Latin and Dutch, hopes to have contributed to a more accurate understanding of Grotius's place in the world. Grotius is far from being the modern author, too often presented as the founder of modern international law, that he is believed to be, and remains firmly rooted in the tradition of writers from the second half of the 16th century. The reader will hopefully better perceive the veracity of this statement through this last and fourth translation.
