“The study undertaken is of considerable interest at a time when young African states have difficult and serious choices to make between the past and the future in the legislative field, and more particularly with regard to family law, as President Ancel so rightly pointed out in his preface. Each report, in accordance with UNESCO's wishes, is divided into three parts: first, the traditional rules are described; then, their modifications under the influence of evolving customs and positive law are analyzed; and finally, a prospective view, in the words of Dean LV Thomas, borrowed from Gaston Berger, is outlined in each case. All these reports highlight an essential feature that already existed under the colonial regime: the juxtaposition of two legal systems, customary and Muslim law on the one hand, and modern law, of European inspiration, on the other, corresponding to two conceptions of life.” (Gilbert Mangin, RIDC, no. 2/1970, p. 434 et seq.).
