"Thus conceived, the work presents itself as a response to that published four years ago by the Institute of Comparative Law of the University of Paris, which analyzed the common law matrimonial property regimes in forty-one countries. While not as broad in scope, the work presented by Professor Claude Renard admirably complements that of his predecessor, taking into account the new German and Dutch laws and the bills pending before the Belgian and French Parliaments. But the author did not intend to simply present the legislation and the bills. He aimed to produce a masterful work of scholarship through the critical examination of the solutions adopted or proposed, and even more so through the reflections he offers in the first part and in a general conclusion, on the concepts that necessarily underlie every matrimonial property regime and on the direction of current developments." (…) Whatever judgment one may make of the author's opinions, one cannot help but admire the mastery with which he has presented this work of comparative law and the relevant and very personal reflections with which he accompanies his exposition. His work will remain fundamental. (André Rouast, RIDC n° 2/1961, p.450-452).
