    "At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, three great codes appeared, three 'stars' sometimes called: the General Code for the Prussian States of 1794, that is, the 'Allgemeines Landrecht für die königlich preussischen Staaten' whose abbreviation used is ALR, the Napoleonic Code of 1804, and the Austrian General Code of Civil Law of 1811. It is therefore to Germany, or rather to the Holy Roman Empire of the Enlightenment, that we must give the credit for having revolutionized its legal system and tried for the first time a legal mode corresponding to modernity: codification. […] The ALR did not align itself with this classicism [the three-part structure of Justinian's Institutes: persons, property, and obligations] and instead preferred a new kind of ordering inspired by Pufendorf, according to which legal institutions were inscribed within a structured reproduction of differentiated social reality. The first part of the ALR presents the legal institutions of property law concerning the individual. As for the second, more composite part, entitled "Associations," it successively describes family legal relations, relations within communities, within corporations, within estates (that is, the peasantry, the bourgeoisie, and the nobility), and finally the legal relations involving the State in its relations with citizens concerning, for example, the Church, state service, schools, and taxation. […] This systematic approach, which was demonstrated in the meticulous structuring of this code and on an encyclopedic scale, comprises nearly 20,000 paragraphs and covers a wide range of subjects, including civil law, criminal law, criminal procedure, and public law […]. » [V.
