The author's importance is well known, both in the history of 19th-century civil law and for his reflections on the "romantic" origins of law. Less well known is that he was also one of the leading maritime law scholars of the period. His treatise, in fact, earned him some staunch enemies because, as in the other subjects he addressed, he did not shy away from unorthodox ideas. In particular, the author attempts to refute the opinions of scholars on the role of history in the development of the particularities of maritime commercial law, and instead tries to demonstrate how this law is constantly being modernized.
