Best known for his contributions to economic theory, Stuart Mill was a member of the House of Commons at the end of his life and, in that capacity, took an interest in constitutional law. This work, which presents the state of liberal thought on the concept of representative government in the mid-19th century, remains primarily known for its position in favor of women's suffrage (p. 234 ff.), a proposal that the author would reiterate before the House of Commons in 1869, where it was rejected by 73 votes to 196.
