Dupin (no. 946) provides the following information: "E. was first a lawyer in the Parliament of Grenoble, then Advocate General and one of the presidents of the same parliament; after that, First President of the Senate of Chambéry. He died in 1636." In this last edition published during his lifetime, there is a curious "notice to the reader" in which he accuses La Rocheflavin of plagiarism, claiming that her famous work, "The Thirteen Books of the Parliament of France," extensively reproduced his collection. It is true that this collection is of particular quality, containing a very substantial number of well-explained rulings (among the notable rulings are those concerning the liberties of the city of Grenoble, questions of abortion, and the fact that "a man condemned to the galleys does not clear his name by enduring torture…"). But we must also highlight the important collection of legal arguments (on the presentation of doctors of law to be admitted to parliament, whether civil death by sentence to the galleys has the same effect as natural death, on a found treasure, whether a clock maintenance contract is rendered void by the fact that the clock was broken and shattered “by the disorder of wars”, whether pledges are valid…). A rather unusual text.
